Skelton Village Trust Newsletter Autumn 2007

Philip Butler

Chairman

Speaker Evening November 22nd  7.30 Village Hall
John Symington: Blind Jack ofKnaresborough

Merchant, soldier and first builder of many of our modern roads, the story of how John Metcalf, despite his blindness, became one of the most prominent Yorkshiremen of the eighteenth century is both astonishing and inspirational. John Symington will regale us with episodes from a life lived to the full.

This is also our Annual Social Evening and the ticket price of £4 includes a bread and cheese supper and one glass of wine. Tickets are available from any committee member (see details at end of newsletter) and from the Post Office.

Local Development Framework (LDF)

City of York is currently seeking opinions on a Local Development Framework (LDF). There are some aspects of this plan like Greenbelt , Traffic on the Ring Road and future housing requirements in York and the surrounding villages that could affect Skelton in the future. The Trust will monitor these proposals in the future and respond accordingly.

SVT and the use of E-mail

The committee still feel that e-mail is the way forward for communication. If you would like to receive information by e-mail or if you have changed your e-mail account, please send an e-mail to the committee member responsible for communications and publicity Derek Jackson (Jmoorlands975@aol.com) so that we can update our records.

Village Archive

Don't forget that our Skelton Village Archive is kept in Skelton Community School (470344), with a second copy of most items in the York City Archive (551878). If you want to look at the archive, please phone to make an appointment. It is usually best to visit the school after 3.00pm. If you have any old photos, letters, or other memorabilia of old Skelton, these can be kept in our "Social History" file, and some future historian may find them fascinating! Items can be given in at the school, or to Nicola Drake, 32, Burtree Avenue, or to Nancy Spratt, 13, The Vale.

Village Trust Website

Over the last year committee member Diane Thornton has been busy creating our own website. It is now virtually complete and can be seen at www.skeltonvillagetrust.org . It is intended to be of interest to members of the Trust, to inhabitants of Skelton and to anyone wanting to learn about our village.

It will contain up to date news about our activities. If you have access to the internet do have a look and let us know what you think. Suggestions for further content welcome – Diane’s email address can be found at the end of the newsletter.

Village Design Statement

As we have reported in the last two Newsletters, planning authorities are encouraging villages to produce their own Design Statement, the purpose of which is to guide and influence future development so that the character and distinctiveness of the village are protected and enhanced. Several villages around York have already completed their document and Skelton’s is well on the way. Over the last year a project team of volunteers (including representatives of the Village Trust and Parish Council) has been discussing and assembling the components of the Statement, and it is planned to have a draft document available for public consultation early next year.

Thereafter it is intended that the Skelton VDS will be submitted to York City Council for formal adoption as Supplementary Planning Guidance. This means that anybody intending to apply for small or large scale development permission in or around the village will have to take account of the contents of the VDS. It thus becomes a valuable safeguard against inappropriate development.

Tree and Bulb Planting

The Village Trust again plans to plant more trees and bulbs around the village this Autumn. The Trust has joined in partnership with the Parish Council to plant five new trees. Two will be planted on the Green near the Church as long-term replacements and three flowering type trees will be planted on Brecksfield. Bulbs will be planted around the new trees and on the small grassed area near the Doctors’ Surgery.
